CHAPTER 16

INTO THE MOUTH OF THE LION

The doors of the colony ship’s internal conveyor system opened and Reeves hurried into the docking garage to find Major Kane and Ambassador One already waiting. Curiously, neither appeared surprised to see him or displayed any concern for his wellbeing.

“I’m guessing that the ship’s computer told you I was coming?” asked Reeves, as he arrived at the foot of the Invictus’ cargo ramp, a little out of breath.

Kane smiled and nodded. “I don’t know what the hell you two talked about, but we seem to have acquired a guardian angel of sorts,” she replied. Kane’s expression then hardened. “What about the Imperator? Is that thing still alive?”

“Our Sa’Nerran friend has a few more scars, but it’s unfortunately still breathing, yes,” Reeves sighed. “I’m beginning to think there’s something else behind the Imperator’s drive to gut me like a fish, though,” he continued, recalling the alien leader’s curious and sometimes confused responses to his questions. “I can’t put my finger on it, but this quest to restore honor to its name just doesn’t make any damned sense.”

“I agree; the Sa’Nerra care nothing for honor,” Ambassador One replied. “The Imperator that the Omega Taskforce fought a thousand years ago was ruthless and utterly without ego. Only strength matters to the Sa’Nerra, not principles.”

“Maybe this Imperator believes it’s undeserving of the title until it kills you?” offered Kane.

“It would not be Imperator if it were not already the strongest of its kind,” Ambassador One cut in. “It could have easily killed Commander Reeves a dozen times by now, including by simply destroying Concord Station. I believe the Commander is correct that there is another motive at work; one we are currently ignorant of.”

Kane’s buzz then vibrated an alert and she checked it. At the same time Ambassador One seemed to get a message, though the android didn’t need a buzz to pick it up.

“The Invictus is reading a power surge coming from the Sa’Nerran Heavy Destroyer,” said Kane. “It looks like it’s trying to break free from the station.”

“Then it’s high time we left,” said Reeves, slapping his XO on the shoulder and running up the rear ramp into the ship.

Kane and Ambassador One followed, both quickly overtaking Reeves due to their untiring stamina. The seismic thrum of the Invictus’ engines and reactor intensified and by the time they’d all reached the bridge, which was now restored to its previous configuration, the Invictus was already heading out of the docking garage.

“I gather that your brief stay on the alien colony ship was quite eventful?” said Ensign Three, as Reeves wearily dropped into his captain’s seat. The android turned to face Reeves and its glowing eyes examined the blood splattered across his battered face and armor. “Though now it appears that you are the one in need of repairs.”

“I’ll be fine, I’ll get my injuries tended to later,” said Reeves, updating his consoles and focusing scans on the Sa’Nerran Heavy Destroyer. “Assuming you have a working med bay, that is?”

“I will configure one immediately,” Three replied.
